Since everyone is shedding light on Sam Pepper for all of his sexual harassment towards women in his videos, I think we need to visit a topic that has never really been fully brought to everyone’s attention. Which is Shane Dawson.

Aside from his obvious blackface:

He has so many “characters” of hispanic and african american descent that are horribly offensive. He tacks on offensive “ghetto” accents and tangled cheap wigs and gives the characters the stereotypical racial persona’s like prostitutes, criminals, maids, cholas, etc.

Just a random example of one of his characters that is a maid with an offensive hispanic accent who he depicted having sex with a dog

He was made popular for his character named Shanaynay who he’s played for years, every video the character is featured in contains extremely racist content. She’s depicted with a “ghetto” accent who makes horrible jokes. I mean there are countless videos of that character and every single one of them contain racist, homophobic, sexist and just outright offensive slurs and jokes. Just go to youtube, type “shane dawson shanaynay” and dozens of videos will pop up and i guarantee each one will have extremely offensive jokes and content.

image

In character or not, Shane’s videos always contain rape jokes, molestation jokes, racist jokes, sexist jokes, pedophilic jokes and homophobic jokes. Whether he’s in a costume and wig while doing it or just him out of character speaking. I actually lost count on how many times this man has said “F**got” over the years.

I am just making this post based on personal experience watching these videos and I am 100% sure there is way more horrible stuff so if you have anymore to say about this please feel free to reblog and add it on because I didn’t even go into depth of his videos and this is what i found with just about 10 minutes of searching things up.

Shane has been making youtube videos for over 5 years now and he’s slid by with no repercussion or consequences of his seriously offensive actions.

Sam’s video was taken down from YouTube within 24 hours of people complaining and he’s now been banned from Vidcon. When will POC on YouTube get this kind of support from the YouTube community? Where’s the petition from famous YouTubers saying this isn’t right?

And if that is hard for you to think about, know that it is harder to live in it.

I am so exhausted by people who do not think this is a problem. I carry a pocket knife, a whistle, pepper spray, and a very sharp self defense keychain with me where ever I go. I look around each corner with a tight stomach, and try to keep my eyes open and darting with consistent awareness. Staying vigilant when going anywhere is a part of every day life for me. And with good reason. The examples I have from just my life alone that support this cautious behavior are countless.
Saying it’s not a problem doesn’t make it go away. It keeps it alive.
Don’t tell me that I’m lying. That I haven’t been catcalled, whistled at, followed, pinched, prodded, felt up, mugged, and sexually assaulted. It is real and all too common and has affected more of my life than I’d care to admit, most of the time. And it is not and has never been my fault. I’m going to talk about it. I’m going to fight you on it. Because if you think it’s not an issue, you’re wrong.

“Everybody has the right to their own opinion :) it’s a free country i can say whatever i want :)” - Usually someone saying something problematic

True!! You can!! I’m all about free speech. But just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. I can go and pee on all my roommate’s food right now- ((I drank a lot of water today)). But that doesn’t mean I should then expect him not to be upset or be shocked when I have to face consequences.

And yes, you can say these things. It also means I can then tell you why what you’re saying is bigoted/racist/homophobic/sexist etc. <3333

An Open Letter to Sam Pepper

lacigreen:

Hi Sam!

Thanks for taking the time to read this letter.  As fellow YouTubers, we have much respect for others who put so much hard work into building their channel.  It’s not easy, and you should be proud!  That said, we’ve noticed that in your success, there has been a lack of respect in return…namely, for women and girls.

You may have noticed that your latest video “Fake Hand Ass Pinch Prank” has garnered considerable negative attention.  In this video, you sexually violate a number of unsuspecting women on the street, many of whom are visibly confused and upset at being touched by you without permission.  One woman even says “I don’t like that!” while you proceed to laugh and touch her more.  In “How to Make Out with Strangers”, you pressure women on camera to make out with you - again, many of whom are visibly uncool with it.  Confused and caught off guard, they painfully follow through with your requests, clearly uncomfortable.  In “How to Pick Up Girls with a Lasso”, you physically restrain women on the street with lassos - many of whom look alarmed to be restrained by a stranger on the street.

You’d probably be alarmed too, wouldn’t you?  Imagine someone on the street comes up and rubs their hand on your bottom, or a girl walks up to you with a camera and forces her mouth onto yours while you’re trying to figure out what’s going on.  Imagine walking down the alley alone, when a guy much larger than you physically restrains you with rope and pulls you toward him.  You probably wouldn’t like it, right?

People don’t like to be violated and they don’t like to see their friends and girlfriends be violated either (hence the group of men that tried to beat you up in the lasso video).  And yet, history suggests that perhaps you find this humorous.  It is very disturbing that we live in a world where the violation of women and girls’ bodies is not only funny, but profitable, and can garner considerable notoriety and views on YouTube.

We are deeply disturbed by this trend and would like to ask you kindly, from one creator to another, to please stop.  Please stop violating women and making them uncomfortable on the street for views.  Please stop physically restraining them and pressuring them to be sexual when they are uncomfortable.  Please show some respect for women’s right to their own bodies.  While it may seem like harmless fun, a simple prank or a “social experiment”, these videos encourage millions of young men and women to see this violation as a normal way to interact with women.  1 in 6 young women (real life ones, just like the ones in your video) are sexually assaulted, and sadly, videos like these will only further increase those numbers.

We realize that people make mistakes, and that sometimes it’s hard to see the ripple effect of one’s actions.  We really hope that you will take a step back and consider the power you have to be someone who makes the world a better place.  It’s not too late to make a change!  We invite you to join us in ending widespread bodily violation that takes place in so many forms all around in the world.

Thanks so much.

This is Sam Pepper. If you don’t know who he is, Sam is a successful YouTube prankster with over 2 million subscribers. He recently uploaded a video titled “Fake Hand Ass Pink Prank" where he pinched unsuspecting girls’ butts without their permission. None of this was done with the girls’ consent…meaning Sam Pepper sexually harassed and assaulted these women.

This is no longer a “simple, harmless prank” but rather a very serious matter and offence. If you haven’t seen the video yet, you can watch, dislike, and report it HERE. You can also take the pledge to help stop sexual violence at itsonus.org. Please do not let Sam get away with this kind of behavior. He crossed the line and needs to be held responsible for his disgusting actions.

Can we, as a community, stop supporting people who do things like this? And while we’re at it can we stop supporting racist YouTubers and Viners? (Note: It doesn’t matter if there’s a PoC in the video/Vine/movie/etc.) Homophobic? Transphobic? General assholes? There’s a trend of people being really successful at doing terrible things, and they get the community’s support because of their success. I don’t care if they’re “cute” or have the haircut you like—there are thousands of other people to entertain you that don’t do shitty things.

it’s not that deep, if they wanted to do something about it they would of. It’s not like he pinched your bums..

it’s not like I’ve been raped either but it doesn’t make rapist any less horrible??? what kinda nonsense????

Fuck outta here with this “well, if they wanted to do something they would have” argument. That girl saying “I don’t like that. No” wasn’t VOCAL enough for you?? Can we talk about how all of these girls looked underage? Sam is what? 25? You’re gonna GROPE teenage girls on the street and because you’re filming it you think it’s okay. This is evidence. Idiot.

He is BLESSED that I wasn’t there to witness this. I would have fucked up all of his footage by following him and loudly proclaiming how this perverted dude was touching girls on the street. I would have called the cops and gladly pointed to his camera man when they asked for proof.

Everyone at third street promenade, where Sam shoots all of these “prank” videos where he touches girls, handcuffs girls and basically uses street harassment as a gag, KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN AND REPORT HIM IMMEDIATELY.
